Bethesda’s ‘Brink’ FPS debuts at No1 for 360/PS3/PC. Developed in the UK by London-based ‘Splash Damage’, this is the developer widely known for the online-only ‘Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory’ (released in 2003) and in terms of physical product ‘Enemy Territory: Quake Wars’, originally released on PC and debuted at No1 in the UK PC Full Price Chart back in week 39, 2007. Also new this week and debuting at No2 is Disney Interactive Studios’ multi-format ‘Lego Pirates of the Caribbean’.
505 Games show they have stamina by returning to the top this week to mark the third week at No1 for ‘Zumba Fitness’ (-3%), just pushing ahead of EA’s ‘Portal 2’ (-43%) which is down to No2. The rest of the chart also sees a shuffle around with Warner Bros.’ ‘Mortal Kombat’ (-52%) at No3 and Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ (-2%) at No4. Both LucasArts’ ‘Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars’ (-29%) and EA’s ‘FIFA 11’ (-41%) move up a place at No5 and No6 respectively.
UKIE is proud to announce that it is sponsoring this year’s Dare to be Digital contest, the world’s leading computer games design competition run by the University of Abertay Dundee, and will be helping judge the completed games.
The Livingstone-Hope ‘Next Gen’ review strongly backed the Dare to be Digital model of delivering practical education in a real-world working environment, calling on sector skills council Skillset to work with Abertay University to introduce workplace simulation throughout UK computer games education.

UKIE member, NESTA, is holding a games investment event on the 25 May. The half-day event, aimed at developers will tackle questions such as: how do you raise money for video games? What are the key factors that an investor looks for? How does the developer fare at each stage? NESTA will provide a perspective from an angel, a venture capitalist and a developer about creating win-win relationships.
This is the last week of April and unusually, contains 2 national holidays - Easter Monday (25th April) and also the Royal Wedding holiday of Prince William & Kate Middleton (29th April). Gamers celebrated by keeping the previous week’s new No1 & No2 exactly where they were, with Valve/EA’s ‘Portal 2’ (-51%) on top for a second consecutive week since launch and Warner Bros. Interactive’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ (-42%) remaining at No2.
Zumba Fitness’ from 505 Games (-8%) takes a second consecutive week at No1, sales down just 8% overall as the new Wii version only drops 10% over last week and the older 360 version actually climbs 14% over last week. Lucasarts’ ‘Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars’ climbs one place, back up to No2 (-12%) which is where it debuted 4 weeks ago.
As part of its on-going commitment to the recommendations from the Livingstone Hope Skills review of the skills needed for the video games and visual effect industries, UKIE today uses its submission to the government’s National Curriculum Review to call for the UK’s children to be taught computer science as a standalone subject in schools.
Digital devices and software are an intrinsic part of modern life. However, computer science, the most important skill required to create the devices and video games of the future, is not currently on the National Curriculum.
‘Zumba Fitness’ topples ‘Crysis 2’, moving up from No2 to become 505 Games’ first ever All Formats No1 and the first fitness title to reach the top spot since ‘Wii Fit Plus’ back in W49 2009. Sales of ‘Zumba Fitness’ fell by 49% after a highly successful launch on Wii, but sales of Crysis 2 were down by 57% which, in a quiet week for new releases, helped the Wii-centric title’s rise to No1.
EA’s ‘Crysis 2’ (-35%) manages to hold off 505 Games’ popular Latin dancing title ‘Zumba Fitness’ (+3148%). EA have now occupied the top spot 6 of the 13 weeks so far this year, thanks to plenty of strong releases. With the Wii version of the game out this week ‘Zumba Fitness’ has shot up the All Formats chart to No2, marking 505 Games’ highest ever entry in the chart (Naughty Bear debuted at No5 and Cooking Mama’s highest position was also No5), which means that LucasArts’ ‘Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars’ (-29%) has been forced down the chart to No3.
