The Future of the Games Sector event
Ukie partnered with Charles Russell Speechlys for an exclusive ‘The Future According To…’ event, aimed at Guildford's local games businesses and hosted in the law firm's fantastic new offices. The event drew in a number of high profile speakers including Simon Benson from Sony talking about the future direction of virtual reality, Unity evangelist Oscar Clarke sharing his insight into the future sustainability of free-to-play vs paid games and Nick Hurley from Charles Russell Speechlys discussing staffing and building teams. Charles Russell Speechlys’ Jamie Cartwright also shared his thoughts on the future of mediation and dispute resolution, and how this will affect the games industry in the future.
The afternoon was rounded off with a panel session, where attendees heard from industry experts and had the opportunity to share their own thoughts. Chris Mehers from Born Ready Games, Michael ‘ODEE’ O’Dell from Team Dignitas, and Alan McDairmant from Criterion shared their insights into the future direction of the industry, as well as upcoming challenges and opportunities for businesses. Hot topics included the rise of eSports and its growing popularity in the UK, potential challenges for independent developers, and the opportunity for potential future collaboration of studios of all sizes.
Nick Hurley, Partner at Charles Russell Speechlys:
“Given Guildford’s position as the “Hollywood of Games” and the “Elysium of Electronics” (The Guardian, June 2014) we were absolutely thrilled to host the first conference of its kind for Ukie in the Guildford hub. The event was a great success and highlighted the range and depth of industry talent in the area.”
