Report highlights North as tech and games powerhouse

A new report commissioned by Tech North and published by the RSA in partnership with the Impact Hub, shows just how much potential the tech and creative sectors have in the North of England.

It finds:

"The Northern tech sector is booming. Jobs in Northern tech are increasing 10 times faster than jobs in non-digital sectors, and the productivity of digital workers is 53 percent higher than the productivity of non-digital workers."

Relative to the UK average - games is the second highest over-represented tech sector in the North according to the RSA analysis of the GrowthIntel data (2015) sourced as part of 2016 Tech Nation.

The report sets out a series of recommendations, focusing on mentoring, collaboration, procurement and incubation.

According to Nesta research cited in Ukie's Blueprint for Growth 70% of games companies are based outside of London and the Midlands, North of England and Scotland have a higher presence of video games companies than other creative industries.

Following our major recommendation to support regional growth, FDI and exports across the UK Ukie is currently working with Local Enterprise Partnerships to promote exports and inward investment and increase skills and apprenticeships.
