Creative Europe MEDIA

What is MEDIA?

MEDIA is a strand of Creative Europe that offers funding to support development, distribution, access to new markets, cooperation projects and international coproduction amongst other things. As part of MEDIA, games companies have access to a production support fund with a total value of €2.5m across all EU member states.

How can MEDIA benefit your studio?

If your studio and your game satisfy the eligibility criteria (see below), you may be able to obtain funding of between EUR10,000 and EUR150,000, which must be 50% match funded. Few studios in the UK have benefited from this fund to date (e.g. for the 12 months up to 30 August 2016 five studios benefitted from an aggregate sum of EUR625k). One of the obstacles is that the fund is only open to games with a ‘narrative’ component, which excludes most games including many innovative and culturally valuable games.

A studio applying to MEDIA for funding must:

  • Be able to prove that they have produced a commercially distributed video game in the past two years
  • Present a sales report
  • Own the majority of the rights to the project to be submitted
  • Be based in, and majority owned by nationals of, a participating country
  • Be registered for a minimum of 12 months and have video game production as their main business activity

The game must have the following characteristics:

  • Originality, innovative and creative value, cultural diversity compared to mainstream works
  • Enhanced European cultural identity and heritage
  • Substantial interactivity with a narrative component
  • High level of ambition in terms of gameplay, user experience and artistic expression
  • Commercial ambition in European and international markets.
  • Cross-border potential
  • The financial contribution of the EU cannot exceed 50% of the total eligible costs of the action.

What will happen post-Brexit?

Creative Europe's programmes may continue to be open to UK applicants following Brexit, depending on the terms agreed between the UK and the EU. Non-EU countries can apply to join Creative Europe.  EEA members such as Norway, for example, as well as Switzerland, participate in the programme, and businesses in those countries can apply for funding.
