About the Studio
Story Juice is an independent immersive storytelling and game development microstudio based in Plymouth, UK, that's committed to helping change the narrative for women and girls in games.
Its multiplatform practice often combines gaming and immersive theatre and clients have included Eden Project, the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, BBC and Almeida Theatre.
The studio is now focusing on its own IP and received a UK Games Fund grant in 2019 for development of feminist punk AR game, The Glass Ceiling Games. It also has a narrative crime game, Underland, in development that emerged from founder Hannah Wood's PhD in interactive narrative.
The Glass Ceiling Games
The Glass Ceiling Games is a feminist punk AR game. Your goal is to slay a series of fantasy combat sports to boss up the ranks of a skyscraper and smash the glass ceiling. It’s inspired by Riot Grrrl and structured like a punk album where each level is a new track.
Levels embed the digital in the real world and feature cathartic mechanics that include slingshotting catcalls, boxing stereotypes, macheteing unsolicited dick pix, batting away emotional labour, throwing babies in baskets labelled ‘man’s work’, and finally, lasering mansplains, before the glass ceiling smashes, the skyscraper crumbles, and you rise atop the rubble with a haul or freedom, money and joy points.
The game has an iconographic cartoon neon art style and bespoke punk soundtrack to immerse you in a satirical alternate power fantasy that subverts everyday sexism.
