In a first, Ukie held two student conferences within a week of each other; one at Staffordshire University and another at Abertay University.
All video talks captured at the conference can be found on the UkieTV YouTube channel here.
Staffordshire University Student Conference
Staffordshire University was first with eighteen speakers from all areas of the games industry spoke to over 250 students from across the country, covering topics such as career paths, start-ups, game development, creative business thinking, PR, community management, game art and game audio, among many others.
Keynotes from Mike Gamble, European Territory Manager at Epic Games and Christopher Knowles, Senior Game Engine Developer at Jagex drew particularly large crowds.
During the talks, students had access to an expo area in which Playground Games, Unity, Codemasters and many others showcased vacant internships and graduate roles. This provided the perfect opportunity for students to gain an understanding of the different roles available to them during and post graduation. Amiqus were also at hand and ready to speak to students about their portfolios and CV's.
Once the talks had concluded, students and speakers were invited over to the Epic Games centre for the network drinks. This area also provided the perfect space for students who had competed in the Ukie Student Game Jam showcased their creations.
Abertay University Student Conference
The second conference to take place was at Abertay University, the first time Ukie had held the event here. Abertay University is renowned for providing some of the best video game courses in the world and as such we felt it only fitting to hold a student conference here.
The day ran in a similar format to that of Staffordshire University student conference with sixteen speakers covering a variety of topics and an expo area in which students could again ask career advice, look at job roles and have their CV's and portfolios looked at.
We were lucky enough to have keynote speaker Hannah Watts, Senior Artists at Coatsink and Abertay University Alumni give a talk to students about her career post graduating. Talks like this are inspirational to students as its incredibly relevant to listen to someone who has walked in their shoes.
Ukie would like to say an incredibly big thank you to the speakers, expo area businesses and staff at either Staffordshire University or Abertay University. We would also like to thank the sponors; Epic Games, Jagex, Amiqus, Coatsink, Codemasters and Tag Games. Without you we could not run these great initiatives each year and we truly appreciate the support, time and effort placed into these conferences.
Talks that were recorded at the conferences will be uploaded to the UKTV Youtube channel in due course.
The next Ukie Student Conference will take place in April 2019. More details on this will follow in the coming year.
