Financing Creativity - How to Manage Your Money

It has been a tough 18 months and many of us working in the creative and cultural industries are struggling with financial worries.

As a nation, we're a little shy when it comes to talking about money but as we move into recovery mode, Creative England has partnered with some key organisations to provide a two-day online Bootcamp to help you get your finances back on track.

This bootcamp will help you if you’re:

  1. thinking about setting up a creative business or becoming self employed and you want to understand finance fundamentals like balance sheets, cashflow, budgeting and jargon
  1. concerned about the current financial status of your business and want to manage debt, improve profitability and plan for stable growth
  1. interested in accessing finance to help your business growth but don’t know where to start or what's available to you

What to Expect

  1. The Bootcamp will take place 10am - 5pm on 23rd and 30th June 2021.
  1. Attendance at both days is highly recommended to get the most out of this opportunity.
  1. All participants will receive a resource pack with some helpful templates and information prior to the event.
  1. We will be conducting an anonymous survey for capturing your main worries and questions to address during the event.
  1. Homework will be set on Day 1 which is designed to help you apply your learning. Completing the homework will be optional.
  1. The Bootcamp will take place on Hopin. Joining instructions will be emailed w/c 14th June directly to everyone who registers on Eventbrite.

Bootcamp Format

Day 1 and Day 2: 10:00 - 13:00

The morning will be spent with David Parrish - a creative entrepreneurship expert and mentor.

David will be drawing on his vast experience of supporting creative and cultural businesses to increase their profits and take us through the foundations of financial planning in an interactive and informal setting. Topics covered will include:

1) How to monitor and measure all your business costs, including indirect and ‘hidden’ costs.

2) How to ensure you don’t run out of cash, using a cash flow projection.

3) How to set your prices to ensure a predictable profit for products, services and projects.

4) How to understand accounting jargon and use financial information to achieve greater success.

Day 1 and Day 2: 14:00 - 17:00

During the afternoon we'll be hearing from a range of industry professionals who specialise in supporting creative businesses with financial planning. The topics covered will include:

  1. Bootstrapping - the art of using personal savings and loaned income from friends and family to set up a business, survive and thrive - delivered by Ward Williams Creative
  1. Contracting - payment structures, protection from late payments and limiting liability delivered by Marks & Clerk Law LLP
  1. Start Up Loans - the Creative England investment team will be giving an overview of the British Business Bank's Start Up Loans scheme for anyone thinking of starting a new business
  1. Business Planning Grants - Creative England's Business Planning Grants are back for anyone working in the screen sector. Find out from the team what exactly is on offer and how you can apply.
  1. Crowdfunding - how to set up and manage campaigns to raise project funding from your audiences, friends and networks delivered by Crowdfunder
  1. Angel Investment - if you're looking for investment into your company or organisation a business angel may be what you need. UKBAA will be outlining the fundamentals of attracting and securing angel investment.

David is a creative industries expert and specialist business advisor for creative businesses and cultural industries organisations.
