The Leeds Data Ethics Forum (a joint initiative by DLA Piper and the Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied Centre at the University of Leeds) is proud to present a special event on 20 October exploring the ICO’s Age Appropriate Design Code. The Code – which is the ICO’s statutory guidance on protecting the privacy of children online – entered into force on 2 September following a 12 month implementation period. Organisations must now be prepared to safeguard children’s data in accordance with the Code. Together with a speaker from the ICO and representatives from impacted businesses we will explore the Code in more detail, and consider some of the wider ethical issues as well as practical challenges it raises in this highly topical area.

To learn more about the background and implications of The Code, an article has been written by DLA Piper senior associate James Clark and associate Anna Ward on the DLA Piper Privacy Matters blog.

At the event Andrew Dyson, Partner and Co-Chair of the Leeds Data Ethics Forum will be joined by a member of the ICO and others who will be impacted by the code. The discussion will cover:

·    Why does the code matter?

·    Which organisations will be affected by the code?

·    How it will be regulated?

·    What impact will the code have on children’s protection?

·    What are the broader ethical challenges around providing digital services to young people, and how can the Code help organisations to navigate these challenges?

We hope you are able to join us for what promises to be an engaging and thought provoking conversation about how online privacy and young people.
