Shadow Creative Industries Minister meets Cambridge games companies
Ukie took senior Labour party MP Chris Bryant, to meet companies from Cambridge’s exciting games cluster last week.
The event was kindly hosted by Jagex, who gave Chris a tour of their studio and talked him through the history and future of their company, as well as the many different creative processes that go into making a game.
We were then joined by a great range of different local companies, including Ninja Theory, Microsoft Research Ltd, Inkle, Sony Guerrilla Cambridge, Gameaware Europe and Utopian World of Sandwiches, as well as local cluster body Games Eden.
There was an in-depth conversation about the reasons for the existence of such a strong cluster of games companies in Cambridge and the strengths it has developed, as well as the opportunities for the future and the challenges that it faces. The importance of building digital skills and forging links with local educators; of enabling the industry to bring in highly skilled individuals from overseas; of good broadband connectivity; and of maintaining Video Games Tax Relief were all highlighted during the discussion.
This was a great opportunity to show an important policy maker the diversity, creativity and economic potential of the games industry, and we would like to thank Jagex for hosting and everyone else, particularly Chris, for joining us for the day.
