Ukie and Creative England announce a new dedicated Scale Up programme for UK games businesses, and call on businesses to apply for the first cohort.

Thursday 30 July - Creative England and Ukie have today announce a new dedicated Scale Up programme for UK games businesses, and call on businesses to apply for the first cohort.

Part of the BFI-funded, Creative Enterprise programme, the prestigious new Games Scale Up programme will support games developers, publishers or support services to learn the vital skills required to grow their businesses.

Creative England and Ukie are recruiting a cohort of 10-15 businesses who have had some recent, proven success, who have the potential and ambition to scale their business and who can demonstrate that their work in some way promotes the art, creativity and storytelling power of game making.

Businesses chosen to join the cohort will:

  • Learn the vital skills required to create and complete a comprehensive plan to scale their businesses
  • Get expert advice on business strategy and planning, funding and finance, taking their businesses to market, decision making and how to structure teams and hire the right talent.
  • Learn directly from and build their network with proven industry leaders

The progamme will be free to participants. It will run for six months, starting in September, and will include masterclasses, workshops and networking opportunities with leading industry partners and investors.

Businesses throughout the UK can apply to join the first cohort, with priority being given to those based in the English regions outside of London. Businesses can sign up and can find out more via the Creative England website.

The programme will include input, insight and advice from leading industry figures. This includes Hiro Capital Partner, Sumo Group Chairman and Creative England Board member, Ian Livingstone CBE, who said: “The UK has some of the most talented video games companies in the world. They over-deliver in content creation but are underserved by investment capital. The Games Scale Up programme is a fantastic opportunity to boost the sector and accelerate the growth potential of UK games businesses.”

Ukie CEO, Jo Twist OBE said: ‘We’re delighted to be working with Creative England to bring our network and industry expertise to this much needed new Games Scale Up programme created just for games businesses. We want our first cohort to build their business skills and get advice directly from industry experts so they can confidently take the next steps to seek investment and grow successful, creative and sustainable companies.”

Haley Edwards, Creative Enterprise Programme Manager said: “The Creative Enterprise programme already has a proven record of delivering top quality business support to the wider screen sector and we’re now delighted to be working with Ukie to add a new element to the programme designed specifically to  the UK’s exciting and innovative games sector. I’d urge games businesses with the ambition and potential to scale their businesses to get in touch with the team.”

The funds are part of the Creative Enterprise programme, has been developed with National Lottery funding from the BFI to grow screen businesses in the English regions. Creative Enterprise was launched two years ago and has been a key programme to support the screen industries in England and help to develop sustainable and successful businesses.
