Since December 2017, the global games industry has been working together to understand what motivated the World Health Organisation, an eminent global organisation that does important work in protecting and promoting healthy lives for all, to propose including a "gaming disorder" in its latest list of mental health diseases.
The World Health Organisation has adopted version 11 of their International Classification of Diseases, a statistical coding tool used by health care professionals and systems around the world for recording, reporting and monitoring health issues in a common way. ICD-11 includes a proposed definition of "gaming disorder" for the first time.
Games industry responds to WHO publication
In view of the publication by the World Health Organisation (WHO) of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) list, organisations representing games industry across the world have expressed their concern at the inclusion of Gaming Disorder, issuing a joint statement:
Last month, we joined forces with our sister trade associations from around the world to write a strongly worded letter to the World Health Organisation (WHO) raising our concerns over the move to include ‘gaming disorder’ in their revised manual, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).
In December the World Health Organisation signalled their intention to include "Gaming Disorder" as a serious health condition in their current draft of the International Classification of Diseases. Last updated in 1990, the eleventh edition of the manual is due to be published in Summer 2018. Ukie have been working hard behind the scenes alongside our international colleagues at ESA, ESA Canada, ISFE and IGEA to challenge this intention.
