With Brexit and the impending end to freedom of movement, skills shortages in the games industry are a key concern now more than ever. There are numerous occupations in the sector struggling to be filled. Long-term, we strongly believe in investing in the domestic workforce and equipping people with the relevant digital skills to help the UK games industry grow. But in the short to medium term, getting the right international talent is absolutely crucial.
The Government's Internet Safety Strategy and how we can balance protection with fun.
Today the Government published their Green Paper on their Internet Safety Strategy. It was a Conservative manifesto commitment to "make Britain is the safest place in the world to be online".
This week, Prime Minister Theresa May delivered her much-anticipated Brexit speech, which, seven months after the referendum result, finally provided some clarity on what ‘Brexit means Brexit’ truly means.
In those months, Ukie has been consulting intensively with the sector through our working groups and via surveys, and feeding those results directly to government, and ensuring the concerns of interactive entertainment are heard in papers submitted to government. It is a critical time to make sure we are front and centre of a future proof Industrial Strategy.
The British Film Institute (BFI) is conducting a major strategic consultation on its new strategy to influence its funding, which includes a set of questions around funding for games.
We are encouraging all members to respond, and will be conducting our own research of views via our survey here. We will be gathering feedback and will submit a response on the 8 September.
HAVE YOUR SAY: High skill visa restrictions announced
The Government's Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) – a semi-independent body set up to advise on immigration policy – is considering several new measures to bring net migration under 100,000 annually, as proposed in Conservative manifestos. We would like your opinion on how these could impact the games industry.
The proposals are focused on the Tier 2 general visa, which enables UK businesses to employ skilled migrants from outside of the European Economic Area.
Treasury asks the industry for input on funding support schemes
Many of you may have used the Enterprise Investment Scheme, Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme, or the Venture Capital Trust Scheme, to help get investment in your business or to get a better deal on an investment yourself.
We want members' views on three new consultations that have been launched.
Addressing different aspects of the digital economy, these all address issues which Ukie has been working on for a long time. We will be responding to each in turn, and need member input to ensure we are accurately representing the views of the games industry.
We have opened a forum discussion on the three consultations, where you can give us your thoughts. Alternatively you can email Andy directly to discuss in private.
