What is Ukie?

Ukie is the recognised trade association for the UK’s video games and interactive entertainment industry. Our mission is to champion the industry’s interests, support sustainable growth and innovation, and shape effective policy and regulation. Ukie’s activity is guided by its governing documents as set out in our Articles of Association.

What does a trade association do?

Ukie is the recognised trade association for the UK video games and interactive entertainment industry. A trade association is a representative organisation for businesses, not individual employees. As a trade association, our role is to represent and promote the interests of the video games businesses which constitute the ‘UK games ecosystem’.

Ukie works to create the best possible environment for UK games businesses to thrive. We:

  • Advocate with government, devolved nations and regional bodies to ensure favourable conditions for the sector, including tax reliefs, access to talent and proportionate regulation.
  • Support business growth through practical resources, events, training, networks and member services.
  • Promote the UK sector nationally and internationally, showcasing British creativity and innovation on the global stage.

What laws and regulations govern Ukie’s work as a trade association?

We have strict obligations under competition law to ensure that we avoid any activities which may lead to anti-competitive practices. This means we cannot under the law interfere with or be otherwise involved in individual company decisions, nor do anything which requires the disclosure of privileged information which might lead to the risk of anti-competitive practices.

 

Our activity is guided by our governing documents and the requirements of relevant legislation, notably the Competition Act 1998 and the Enterprise Act 2002.

Who can become a member of Ukie?

Membership is open to organisations working in or supporting the UK games and interactive entertainment industry, from indie developers to major studios, from publishers to educational and skills bodies, from service companies to technology partners.

By joining Ukie, members become part of a national network committed to strengthening the UK games industry and contributing to its long-term success.

Does Ukie represent all games companies in the UK?

Ukie represents a broad cross-section of the UK games industry, with more than 700 direct member businesses across the country. While not every company in the sector is a member, Ukie’s work benefits the industry as a whole, ensuring a stronger, more unified voice for UK games.

How does Ukie engage with the Government?

Ukie regularly works with government departments such as the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and regional authorities.

We respond to consultations, provide evidence, highlight business needs, and make policy recommendations that reflect the realities of running games businesses in the UK. Our aim is to help shape legislation and regulation that supports innovation, protects players, and sustains a globally competitive industry.

How is Ukie funded?

Ukie is an independent, not-for-profit trade association, funded through membership fees, sponsorship, partnerships and commercial services. We do not rely on government funding for our core advocacy work. This independence allows us to represent the UK games industry’s interests fairly, impartially and effectively.

Do you represent individual games businesses?

No. Ukie represents the collective interests of its member companies, not individual businesses or employees. We advocate on behalf of the wider UK games industry, ensuring that government, policymakers and other stakeholders understand the needs and contributions of the sector as a whole. While we do not intervene in individual business or employment matters, our work aims to create an environment in which every UK games business can succeed.

Does Ukie get involved in labour disputes or union matters?
