Ukie’s response to the Scaling up: AI and Creative Tech inquiry highlights the UK games industry’s role as a global leader in creative innovation and technology adoption. With over 2,000 active games businesses and a consumer market worth £7.8bn, the sector is uniquely positioned at the intersection of cultural creativity and cutting-edge tech like AI. Ukie calls for a supportive environment that fosters R&D, incentivises investment, and strengthens pathways between education and industry to meet rising demand for skills. The organisation also emphasises the importance of tailored support for SMEs, export growth, and local cluster development to ensure the industry can continue to scale sustainably.
The submission outlines key recommendations for government, including creating a specific strategy for creative tech, modernising support for interactive entertainment, and ensuring regulatory frameworks, particularly around AI, are flexible, innovation-friendly, and co-designed with industry. Ukie stresses that responsible use of AI must uphold copyright, transparency, and fair access to tools. With the right policies in place, the UK can unlock the full economic and cultural potential of creative tech, making it a cornerstone of the UK’s future growth.
